Cyriel Dessers is delighted to score the winning goal in Heracles Almelo’s 1-0 home win against champions Ajax on Sunday night.

Dessers’ thumping half-volley in the 76th minute gave Heracles their third successive home league win over the reigning champions.

The win was Heracles first in their last eight league matches and their third consecutive against Ajax.

The 24-year-old, who is expected to be named in Nigeria’s squad for next month’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone, is the top scorer in the Dutch topflight with 15 Eredivisie goals from 24 league appearances for Heracles this season.

“I was talking about it recently with Janis Blaswitch. This time he saw me standing free, the ball was carried by the wind and I shot it in well,” Dessers told FOX Sports

“The puzzle had to come together again. It’s great that this is happening now. Let’s hope the puzzle stays for a while. We needed this win for a while. It’s really very nice.

“Ajax were not good and neither were we. But it is fantastic that we have been able to make a difference. I won a duel against Daley Blind and struck the ball well. We can enjoy this.”

The win sees Heracles climb to ninth with 32 points after 24 games, six points adrift of the Europa League playoff zone.
