The President of the Para-Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Mr Chikwendu Amobi, functioned as a helper at the recently-concluded 2019 World Para Athletics Championships held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
A picture showing Amobi pushing one of the para-athletes at the competition drew criticisms from Nigerians.
In the picture, Amobi was seen assisting Flora Ugwunwa, who won silver medal in the Women’s Javelin Throw F54 with a best throw of 18.38m at Dubai Championships.
Our correspondent gathered that Nigerian athletes lacked helpers at the tournament.
According to some of the athletes that represented the country in the competition, Nigeria failed to provide them with basic necessities.
Narrating the ordeals of the athletes at the competition, Lauritta Onye, who competed in the women’s F40 shot put event, lamented that they were poorly prepared for the competition.
She said, “Our coming to this World Championships in Dubai was not prepared. How can athletes go to world championships, which is equivalent of the Olympics, without camping, without coaches? How can athletes arrive a day before their competitions?”
Onye, the world record holder, clinched bronze in the women’s F40 shot put on the final day of the championships with a distance of 8.00m.
