The President, Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World, Lagos Chapter, Prof Joy Okpuzor, has called for increased government and private sector investment in women and girl’s development in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to achieve the sustainable development goals for education.
She said the application of STEM education would assist in solving Nigeria’s problem and improve the economic status of the country.
Okpuzor said this on Wednesday at the University of Lagos while announcing the organisation’s forthcoming International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
She said the event would host an essay competition for 3,000 secondary school girls in both private and public schools across Lagos metropolis in STEM to discourage inequality and gender biases that had hindered the pursuit of excellence in science-related fields by most women and girls.
She said, “Science and gender equality are the two most important factors necessary for the attainment of internationally agreed developmental goals, which include the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.
