- John Obuh has resigned his position as the coach of Nigeria Professional Football League side Akwa United.
John Obuh has resigned his position as the coach of Nigeria Professional Football League side Akwa United.
Akwa United’s media officer, Patrick Mfon confirmed Obuh’s resignation while speaking with our correspondent on Monday.
“John Obuh resigned this morning (Monday), with his resignation letter dated December 15. The letter got to the chairman this morning, and I was called in to issue a statement to that effect,”
He said the coach tendered his resignation due to “some level of discipline and insubordination by some of the players which has caused the team valuable points.”
A source in the club told our correspondent that Obuh’s resignation was a result of rudeness to him by some players during their NPFL match-day eight match against MFM FC at the Soccer Temple, Agege on Friday, which they lost 3-0.
According to the source, one of the players, who is part of the home-based Super Eagles openly ignored directives from the coach during the game.
The club released a statement on Monday, accepting Obuh’s resignation, praising him for his service to the club.
The statement also announced the indefinite suspension of one player, while two players were also to face disciplinary actions.
“Yes, coaches take responsibility when things go awry, yet we can testify to the professionalism and discipline you brought to bear in the running of the club including your untiring belief in the God factor in the life of this great organisation. We will miss you,” the statement read.
Meanwhile Akwa United have debunked media reports that the club have appointed Kennedy Boboye as their new coach.
According to the club’s spokesman, no one has been appointed to replace Obuh, as the club wants to focus on their upcoming NPFL match against Rivers United..
“As we speak, we don’t have a new coach. Of course, people are speculating, I have heard so many names, I have heard Imama, I have heard many names. But as I am talking to you as the media manager of the club, I have not heard, and I don’t know who the club would pick.
“We trained this afternoon (Monday), we have a match on Wednesday against Rivers United. John Obuh did not work alone here, there were other assistant coaches who worked with him.
