The Nigerian Paralympic team, winners at the recent World Para-Powerlifting World Cup in Abuja has asked former President of the Nigerian Para-Powerlifting Federation, Queen Uboh-Idris, to return the trophy they won at the competition.

Nigeria won 13 gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals to top the medals chart of the three-day event.

Speaking at the reception organised to honour the victorious Paralympians, captain of the team Lucy Ejike said Uboh-Idris took away their winners trophy, making it impossible for them to present it to the Minister of Youth and Sports Development Sunday Dare.

“We appeal to Uboh-Idris to return the overall trophy we won, which we are supposed to present to the sports minister, Sunday Dare, who has been a great motivator,” Ejike said.

“This trophy is our sweat, commitment and efforts to make Nigeria proud. We are begging her to please return the trophy so that we can present it to the minister, who will present it to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).”

Technical Director of the NPPF, Joy Mayaki, in a chat with our correspondent, said the athletes were right to ask for their trophy from Uboh-Idris.

“It is no secret that after the competition as she usually does, she took the overall trophy and then, she had the best male trophy, the best female trophy too. She did not drop any of them with the athletes’ representative,”
