Man remanded for defrauding admission seekers

A 31-year-old man, Emmanuel Adedigba, was on Wednesday remanded in the Ile-Ife Prison for defrauding one Ezekiel Faniyi of N512,000 on the pretext of assisting him to secure university admission for his daughters.

The accused was arraigned before an Osun State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ile-Ife on two counts bordering on fraud and stealing.

The prosecutor, Glory Ona, said Adedigba committed the offence in March 2017 at the Gbalefefe area of Modakeke.

Ona alleged that the accused obtained N512,000 from Faniyi and promised to assist him process university admission for his daughters, but failed to do so.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 383, 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State, 2002.

Adedigba pleaded not guilty to the charges.

His counsel, Mr T.A. Adebiyi, urged the court to commit his client to bail with an assurance that he would provide reliable sureties.

Ruling on the bail application, Magistrate Habibat Basiru told counsel for the accused to file a formal application.

She directed that the accused be remanded in the Ile-Ife Prison and adjourned the matter till July 22 for hearing.
