Man arraigned for ‘NI.6m theft’

A 47-year-old man, Samuel Umechukwu, was yesterday arraigned before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly stealing N1.6 million meant for the purchase of rice.

Umechukwu is facing a three count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence and stealing before Magistrate A. A. Adesanya.

Prosecuting Insp. Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on February 29, 2018 with one other person still at large.

Insp. Uche said the defendant obtained the money from one Mr Ugochukwu Nebo, with a promised to supply some of bags of rice.

According to him, the defendant absconded with the money and failed to supply the goods.

He pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Adesanya granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case continues on December 16.
