The West African Examinations Council has said it will partner examination bodies from more than 15 African countries to deploy Information and Communication Technology solutions to combat cases of examination malpractices across the continent.
The council and other examination bodies, under the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa, stated this in a communiqué released at the end of its 37th conference.
The communiqué read, “On the role of the ICT in curbing examination malpractices, the threats of malpractices on the integrity of qualifications awarded by examination bodies were discussed under the conference. The prospects and challenges of applying ICTs in curbing examination malpractices were also discussed.
“Various ICTs based solutions were presented for members to consider. It was a consensus that ICTs are indispensable tools for curbing examination malpractices.
“The conference made the following resolutions; one, examining bodies should endeavour to embrace ICT based innovative approaches in their operations and assessment practices. Two, the AEAA should strengthen its capacity building programme to support the upcoming innovative approaches in member countries.
“Also, educators and assessment experts should consider reviewing the current ways of teaching, learning and assessment to ensure that meaningful learning takes place to counter the scourge of examination malpractices.”
The Head of WAEC Nigeria, Mr Olu Adenipekun, in an interview with our correspondent, said, “In fighting examination malpractices, we have moved to a computer-based strategy. In Nigeria, as far as ICT is concerned, WAEC has started using technology in the various aspects of our duties so as to deliver quality services to our candidates.”
