Police rescue 108 from Ilorin torture centre

Police in Ilorin on Thursday rescued about 108 victims comprising children, men and women from an illegal rehabilitation centre located at Gaa’Odota area in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Addressing journalists in Ilorin late on Thursday, state Commissioner of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, said the command raided the centre following an intelligence report on the activities of the owner of the illegal centre.

He said his men discovered that some of the inmates had lived in the place for over five years.

Egbetokun explained that the inmates were kept in an unhygienic condition, adding the many had been afflicted with diseases without treatment.

He noted that some of the inhabitants of the centre were chained and underfed judging by their appearances.

Egbetokun maintained that the command would carry out   surveillance to uncover similar centres in other parts of the state.

He said the command would contact parents of inmates to re-unite them with their families.

When asked on the whereabouts of the owner of the alleged illegal rehabilitation centre whose name was given as Abdulraheem Owotutu, the police boss said he had been cooperating with the command, adding that he was the one that told the police that  all those found at the centre were brought by their families for treatment.
