Shakurideen Olofin, chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Lagos State chapter, has lamented the spate of killings, kidnappings and banditry in parts of the country, saying the situation was getting out of hand.
Olofin, who spoke on the sideline of the group’s meeting in Lagos on Thursday, urged the federal and state governments to do something urgently so that the nation would not be engulfed in more serious crises.
Olofin, also the Lagos State chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), lamented that the rate Nigerians were being killed or kidnapped on daily basis had become alarming, stressing that the citizens did not deserve such.
He stressed that the duty of the government was to protect the citizens and their properties as well as provide dividends of democracy, stressing that this would not be possible in a state of anarchy.
The IPAC boss, however, warned that as alarming as the level of insecurity had become, adding, “We should be very careful not to demonise any tribe. We have criminally minded people in South West, South East, South South and in the Middle Belt. We should not generalize in order not to set the nation on fire.
“Several people dress like the Fulani to wreak havoc and unleash mayhem, killing, kidnapping, maiming and raping people. We should, therefore, be careful not to label a tribe or people.”
Olofin urged political leaders to understand that if there was no nation, state, local government, there would not be anybody to govern, stressing there was the need for peace in the country for meaningful development to take place.
