The Ogun State Government has disclosed that not less than 500 hectares of land have been prepared for the beneficiaries of the Achor Borrowers programme for cassava production.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Samson Odedina, said this on Monday shortly after he led a team to monitor the clearing of land at Apojula Village in the Odeda Local Government Area of the state.
Odedina said the programme was to reduce unemployment to the barest minimum by linking youths to agric opportunities to ensure food security.
The commissioner explained that each beneficiary would be entitled to one hectare of land.
He further explained that the state government would link up the farmers with buyers immediately after harvest.
Odedina added that another focus of the state government was to train competent farmers that would tackle the challenges in the agric industry.
The commissioner said the government had so far cleared over 500 hectares of the government-acquired land in the Ogun Central Senatorial District.
He added that more land would also be cleared in other two senatorial districts.
In his remarks, the state Chairman of Anchor Borrower Programme Steering Committee, Prof. Bola Okuneye, said the state government was planning to extend the land to 7,000 hectares.
