A corruption index survey conducted by the research and training arm of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, which was presented in Abuja on Tuesday, said students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria were dangerously exposed to corruption and very susceptible to graft.

During the presentation of the survey tagged, “Corruption awareness attitude and susceptible survey of students of tertiary institutions 2019,” by the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria, the ICPC Chairman, Bolaji Owasanoye, said senior-level positions in the executive, legislative and judicial arms of government were usually held by graduates of tertiary institutions.

He said corruption- preventing activities at the level of tertiary institution was therefore necessary to break the stranglehold of corruption in public service.

Owasanoye said, “For example, 32 per cent of the students held the view that everyone in Nigeria is corrupt.

“This erroneous worldview may be applied to justify acts of corruption. It is worrisome that 76 per cent of the surveyed students reported that they had personally witnessed acts of corruption while 44 per cent said they had personally engaged in acts of corruption.”
