Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has inaugurated a new executive in the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) under Christian Opata as chairman.
The new executive also has Joseph Chukwuma as general secretary and Nobert Eze as treasurer.
Making his inaugural speech on Tuesday in Nsukka, Opata, a lecturer in the Department of History and International Studies, pledged to prioritise the welfare of all ASUU members in UNN.
According to Opata, under the new UNN ASUU leadership, the welfare of members would be given priority, as every union aims to ensure the welfare of members.
The chairman assured that his leadership would pursue vigorously the promotion and allowances due to all members.
“Very soon, we will set up a committee that will ascertain why the salaries of academics in UNN are different from those of others in federal universities in the country.”

“We will put measures in place so that more of our members will have access to TETFund research grants in order to boost academics and research in the university,” Opata said.

Opata announced plans by his leadership to build a befitting secretariat for ASUU in the university.

He said it was improper for the union to be holdings meetings and congresses in students lecture halls, adding that his administration would do everything possible to get land from the management for building an ASUU Secretariat.

He expressed appreciation to ASUU members in UNN for finding him and other executive members worthy to lead the union.

“I thank you for electing us during the ASUU election on June 20. My promise to you all is that, we will not disappoint. The confidence bestowed on us will not be reposed. We will do our best to take ASUU-UNN to next level,” he said.
