Leganes, who parade Nigerian defenders Kenneth Omeruo and Chidozie Awaziem, have been relegated from the Spanish LaLiga to the Segunda Division for the first time in their history,

Javier Aguirre’s side needed to beat champions Real Madrid at home in their final league game of the season on Sunday, but they drew 2-2, a result which confirmed their demotion to the second tier four years after they were promoted, having won the Segunda division in 2016.

Goals from Sergio Ramos and Marco Asensio for Madrid ensured strikes from Bryan Gil’s and Roger Assale counted for nothing in the encounter.

Omeruo made 23 appearances in the outgoing season, while Awaziem featured in 29 games for Leganes. The Cucumbers endured a shocking restart after the coronavirus lockdown – with the side winning only three of their 11 fixtures.

Aguirre’s men won a total of eight games, drew 12 and suffered 19 defeats all season. They also conceded 66 goals, while only managing to score a measly 39 at the other end.

Espanyol and Mallorca are the other two teams relegated from the Spanish topflight division.

Awaziem, who is on a season loan deal from FC Porto, is expected to return back to his parent club, while it remains to be seen if Omeruo will go down with the club, having joined permanently last summer.
