The Nigerian Navy Secondary School Alumni Association has inaugurated a programme to improve discussion towards achieving a better nation.

The programme is known as the Nigerian Navy Secondary School Alumni Thought Leadership Series.

At the inaugural edition in Lagos with the theme, ‘The Energy Business in Nigeria,’ a member of the graduating class of ’93, Ladipo Adedeji, said for over 37 years, Nigerian Navy Secondary Schools had raised outstanding leaders in every sphere of society.

“As alumni of the institution, we hope that the outcomes from this thought leadership series will fulfill part of our responsibilities in nurturing leaders in Nigeria,” he said.

According to the General Alumni President, Mr Gboyega Apata, the vision of the TLS is the conviction that when a country places a premium on its people and ideas as assets, it sets a path to growth and development.

He said the TLS was the alumni’s contribution to changing society.

During the panel discussion which focused on energy, experts urged investors seeking to enter into the country’s oil and gas sector to build capacity through collaborations.

One of the panel guest speakers, Mr Tayo Ogunbanjo, said while oil and gas had been contributing less than 20 per cent to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product, it had been providing over 90 per cent of foreign exchange earnings.

He stated that recent key developments such as Local Content Policy would provide opportunities for local participation.

Another panelist, Mr Femi Odusote, said global trends of increased oil supply coupled with the decreasing demand had led to lower oil prices which might persist.

According to him, companies, as well as countries, need to adopt strategies for survival.

“Nigeria needs to make the transition to a gas economy for development and economic growth by unlocking huge potential in this space,” he added.

The Head of Service, Lagos State and an alumnus of the institution, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, lauded the TLS initiative.
