Tennis: Nigeria’s men crash out of 2020 Olympic qualifiers

In the first match, Olajide Omotayo and Segun Toriola lost the doubles to Samuel Kulczycki and

Marek Badowski 11-9, 12-10, 9-11, 11-2, while Jakub Dyjas defeated Quadri Aruna 11-7, 10-12, 11-3, 11-5 in the first singles match, giving Poland a 2-0 lead.

Omotayo pulled one back for Nigeria, defeating Marek Badowski 9-11, 17-15, 11-6, 11-7, while Aruna drew level, defeating Kulczycki.

Aruna won the match 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5.

Nigeria however lost the deciding set, as Toriola fell to the superior power of Dyjas, who had earlier defeated Aruna.

Dyjas defeated Toriola 10-12, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8 to claim a 3-2 victory.

The loss meant Nigeria will not be represented in the men and women’s team events of the 2020 Olympics, with Egypt Africa’s sole representatives, after winning gold at the 2019 Africa Games in Morocco.
